Abstract

This study examined the effects of media literacy-based activities on students’ media literacy and learning attitudes in university-level general English courses. The instructional materials were based on popular culture familiar to 121 engineering students at a university. Classroom activities included word cloud activities, critical reading, and critical writing conducted via online platforms, enabling students to share their work and engage in peer feedback. A pre-survey was conducted during the first week, followed by a post-survey in week 15, evaluating four domains: access, analysis, evaluation, and action. Paired t-tests indicated that post-survey scores were significantly higher than pre-survey scores in all domains. A two-way mixed ANOVA revealed a significant interaction effect in the action domain. The low-proficiency group exhibited a greater increase in scores than the other groups, thereby narrowing the gap between proficiency levels. Learning attitudes, which included participation, interest, and satisfaction, were also positive. These findings indicate that media literacy-based general English courses significantly enhance learners’ perceived media literacy, especially among lower-level students, and foster positive learning attitudes.
