Abstract

This study aims to identify English learning motivation and demotivation factors among students enrolled in vocational high schools in Korea. The participants were 12 students at seven high schools in Seoul. A series of in-depth interviews followed, which consisted of semi-structured items to figure out individual participants’ unique ideas and English-related experiences. After the coding analysis of interview data, systematic analyses were conducted based on Dörnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System. The results showed that the participants’ primary motivational constructs were positive previous English learning experiences and effective advice from parents and teachers. Their primary demotivational constructs were parents’ and teachers’ negative influence, parents’ vague academic advice, and the disparity of ideal L2 self between students and parents. The findings suggest that student career-oriented curriculum needs to be developed to enhance vocational high school students’ motivation for learning English.
