Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate recent trends in research on elementary English education for 1st and 2nd graders. A selection of 38 studies on research trend analysis about this topic was made, and an examination of research trends was conducted, encompassing sub-categories like publication patterns, methodologies, and subjects. Overall, the research papers focusing on English education for 1st and 2nd graders exhibited a balanced quantitative trend across curriculum periods. Regarding research methods over time, quantitative studies held the largest share, followed by qualitative studies, with mixed methods research consistently being more prevalent than both quantitative and qualitative approaches. While empirical studies validating English education in real-world settings garnered considerable attention for 1st and 2nd graders, they accounted for only half, but not the entirety, of the studies. Consequently, it is anticipated that English education for 1st and 2nd graders will continue to draw significant interest in the future. Alongside developmental and theoretical research endeavors, there will likely be an ongoing surge in practical English education targeting these age groups. Consequently, numerous empirical studies aimed at verifying the efficacy of these approaches are expected to be consistently pursued.
