Abstract

This study investigated the effect of students’ variables on English test scores, using the Seoul Educational Longitudinal Study of Students (SELSS) data. In this study, 4th (n=4685) graders’ English test scores in the year of 2021 were employed and sixty variables were selected from the survey data from both students and their parents. The following three research questions were addressed. First, what is the current status for English private tutoring, English after-school-programs, and attitude toward English classes? Second, what is the relationship between student variables and performance on English tests? Third, what is the most powerful variable to predict English test scores? Three statistical analyses such as descriptive, correlation, and stepwise regression analysis were performed. Results of correlation analysis revealed that attitude toward English classes was highly correlated with English test scores. Results of the regression analysis showed that parents’ educational views on academic advancement was the best predictor of English test scores. The findings provide practical teaching and learning implications for students, parents, and teachers with respect to improving English achievement.
