Abstract

This study identified burnout profiles among elementary English teachers and examined the factors influencing them through Latent Profile Analysis (LPA). Using data from the 2023 Korean Elementary Teacher Panel Study, we assessed emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment among 128 teachers responsible for English instruction. Four burnout profiles emerged: Emotionally Exhausted type, Latent Burnout type, Adaptive type, and Highly Burned-Out type. In a subsequent multinomial logistic regression using the Adaptive type as the reference group, higher administrative workload stress significantly increased the likelihood of belonging to the Emotionally Exhausted or Latent Burnout type. Conversely, higher teacher efficacy increased the likelihood of belonging to the Adaptive type over the Latent Burnout or Highly Burned-Out types. In addition, an intention to continue teaching until retirement and teaching in a metropolitan or special district were found to lower the risk of being categorized in the Highly Burned-Out type. These findings suggest that elementary English teacher burnout is closely linked not only to individual traits but also to school environmental factors, highlighting the need for strategies such as reducing administrative burdens and enhancing teacher efficacy to prevent burnout.
